Big Girl Bedroom Glow-Up: Wall Paneling, Shelf Styling & $11 Faux Beams

Designing a “big girl” bedroom doesn’t have to mean big budgets. This room transformation proves you can create warmth, texture, and personality using affordable DIY upgrades that completely change the feel of a space.

This bedroom was designed to feel cozy, grounded, and just a little bit bold — while still being functional for school, relaxing, and growing into.

Let’s break down the details.

1. DIY Wall Paneling for Instant Character

Wall paneling is one of my favorite ways to elevate a bedroom. It adds architectural interest without major renovation costs.

For this room:

We created a simple box-style panel design.

Painted it in a calming, muted tone to keep the space feeling soft.

Extended the paneling behind the bed to create a built-in headboard effect.

Paneling instantly makes a room feel intentional and custom — and it’s incredibly budget-friendly when done with simple trim and paint.

Design Tip: Keep the panel color slightly deeper than your trim for a subtle but rich contrast.

2. Shelf Styling That Grows With Her

A floating shelf above the bed (or along a feature wall) adds both storage and personality.

In this space, the shelf:

Displays meaningful decor pieces.

Leaves room for books, framed photos, and small keepsakes.

Can easily evolve as her interests change.

I always encourage using sentimental pieces. A bedroom should reflect who she is — not just what’s trending.

3. Faux Ceiling Beams for Warmth (Yes… for $11!)

One of the most impactful upgrades in this room? The faux beams.

Instead of installing expensive solid wood beams, we:

Created lightweight faux beams.

Stained them in a warm wood tone.

Installed them to add texture and contrast against the ceiling.

They cost around $11 per beam, and the transformation is huge. The beams balance the softness of the paneling and bring in that cozy farmhouse-inspired warmth — without feeling overly rustic.

Budget Tip: Hollow box beams made from inexpensive boards or MDF can look just as beautiful as solid.

4. Functional Desk Space

Every growing girl needs a space to create, study, and dream.

The bedroom desk area:

Keeps the layout practical.

Uses warm wood tones to tie in with the beams.

Maintains a clean, uncluttered look so the room still feels restful.

A zebra rug adds personality and contrast while keeping the design playful.

5. The Overall Feel: Calm + Confident

Because I’ve worked in mental health for 13 years, I understand how much a bedroom environment impacts mood, sleep, and emotional regulation.

This space was intentionally designed to:

Feel grounding.

Promote calm.

Encourage independence.

Still feel warm and safe.

Design isn’t just about pretty spaces — it’s about how those spaces make us feel.

I’ll make these Faux Beams for your home and install for $17.00 per linear foot.
